I got the results back from my hormone saliva test, and as suspected, my progesterone levels drop during my luteal phase. My gyno prescribed 100 mg of progesterone (bioidentical hormone) which I take at night on day 22 through the end of each cycle. I've only done this for one cycle, and I had two migraines pretty soon after starting it and have had really bad headaches most of the other days. I'm going to stay positive and hope that this is just an adjustment period and that once my body is used to the progesterone boost each cycle, I'll see an improvement in my migraines and headaches.
I also got blood test results back from my neurologist's office. She had all of the following tested:
We hadn't met to review the results, but from what I could tell from looking at them on the web portal, everything was normal except for my carbon dioxide levels, which were a little low. My next neuro appointment is in January, and we'll probably go over the results then.

May I ask, did you request the blood work from your neuro or did they just decide to do that test on their own? Do you find it hard to work with your neuro and gyno abour your migrianes? I do. I mean talking to them both.
I hope the shots will help your migraines. Be sure to let us know once you've adjusted and know the impact.
Hoping you get a handle on this. I know its hard when you hope that something is WRONG so you can figure it out!
I hope the hormone therapy works for you!
I just went to the doctor about neck pain and thought that it may be the cause of alot of my headaches. I also had labs done to make sure all was good...I have been having an excess of headaches lately and have been extremely fatigued. I found out that I do have some arthritis in my neck, and everything else came back great. The dr. didn't seemed concerned about the neck and just wanted to drug me up for the headaches....which I don't exactly understand...I was thinking that treating the source would have been the smarter route (but what do I know!)Anyway, the cause of my fatique is probably due to my mitro valve prolapse. I kind of forgot that it causes fatigue along with several other things. so I looked up symptoms and migraine headaches is one of the main symptoms..I never knew that!!. Constant nagging dull headaches are associated with it also.
I instantly thought of you...just wondered if you have ever been told you have a mitro valve. My regular doctor never caught it but my heart specialist did. I have a mild case but it causes all sorts of symptoms, and apparently headaches are one of them....I never knew!! this link has some info about it. http://www.wright.edu/nursing/practice/mvp/default.htm
The bad thing is, there is really not a whole lot you can do about it. Many of the drugs can make it worse. I know that when I take midrin for my severe aches my heart goes nuts...
Just a thought!
I am SO GLAD the doc ordered a full thyroid profile and not just a check of TSH. That'll give good indications of whether your thyroid gland itself is working properly. TSH levels might just be a reflection of the "feedback loop" but no information about how that loop is affecting your thyroid gland.
Good show!
Love and hugs, sweetie!
Fighter - I asked the neuro about a huge list of potential medical problems that could be linked to my migraines, and she picked these tests to cover much of them. I don't find it hard to talk to my doctors for the most part, but I wish they were in the same facility and could work together to come up with a comprehensive plan for me...that'd be ideal!
Migrainista - of course I'll keep everyone updated! If I don't adjust soon I may try different types of progesterone like shots or creams (I didn't specify in my post but right now I'm taking progesterone in pill form).
Winny - Exactly...I'm always hoping for opposite what the typical patient would hope for! Glad you understand.
Anon - I've had an echocardiogram so that probably would have shown if I had MVP, but I appreciate the suggestion! Sorry you're having to deal with that plus everything else. I agree that it would make sense to treat your neck pain and it might help your head...maybe seeing a PT or chiropractor would help if you haven't already tried it.
Parin - I wasn't aware of that, but that gives me even more confidence in my current neurologist. Thanks!
I know with me an echocardiogram did not detect mine....
Yeah, its gets old headaches and the extra. I think we all learn to cope, some days its easier than others.
People often think we are weak, but in fact we are the exceptionally strong ones because we learn to live our lives with pain daily.
Anon - AMEN to that!!
What did end up detecting your MVP? Just curious!
I have been following you for awhile... so many times it seems like I am reading my own life minus about a million drugs... I am so sorry of what you are enduring, but I so can relate. I just had a bubble test done and found out I have a hole in my heart as I do have a white spot on my brain. I have a PFO. The white spot indicates I have had a stroke. If you have a hole in your heart (PFO) it might be the same thing... I have not read to see if you have looked into this yet. The bubble test id the only way to determine it. Not another way. Just wondering and hoping for you :).
Tracy,
Thank you for following my blog! The hole in your heart and stroke sound scary - I hope it ended up being a positive thing in that you were able to find a way to lessen your pain!
I have heard of PFO, and although I thought I'd been tested for it, I had only an echocardiogram and not a bubble test (which I hadn't heard of before). Thanks for giving me this info and sharing your experience.
Btw - I checked out your blog, and you're a very talented photographer! :)
Thanks for sharing your results. My spit test results came back with low progesterone, too. My hormones are all out of whack and showed that I ovulated 2x that month and high testosterone most likely from ovarian cysts. I started taking some whole food supplements my accupuncturist recommended and sublingual bioidentical progesterone in the morning. I've also had a couple of migraines and almost daily headaches since starting so I'm hoping its the adjustment and things will improve. Thanks again and keep us posted on your progress.
Ali,
How cool that we're both going through the same thing! Well not really cool...it stinks...but you know. :) Please keep me posted on how things go with the progesterone. I'm a few days away from starting it again for my second cycle, and I'm terrified I'll get migraines again (I actually have one today but it's more nausea than anything).
I didn't know high testosterone could mean ovarian cysts, but that makes sense because I suspect that I have at least one.
Good luck with your new treatment plan!
Health conditions caused by hormone imbalances have started to generate a lot of attention. You may want a more comprehensive hormonal test that would include other important female hormones.
How did you get someone to test your hormones? I've been trying to get that done for years (even went to a hormone clinic in SF), but no one will do it. So frustrating when you know it's hormones that start a cycle.
Che,
I found a gyno who actually pays attention to alternative care, like bioidentical hormones. She gave me a kit to do the testing, I mailed it in, and then the company contacted my gyno (one of the forms I mailed in had her info on it) and she went over the results with me. I don't know for sure that you necessarily need to see a doctor to get the test done though...you may be able to contact the company directly: http://www.diagnostechs.com/TestPanels/FemaleHormonePanel.aspx
I wonder if the dose was too high for you? Also wondering if you spot a week before your period? I used to and have read that is a sign that progesterone levels are dropping too low too soon. Just an interesting tid bit.
